富勒頓先生也許覺得自己能把作案者猜個八九不離十。但他又沒那麼確信，因為至少有三個嫌疑人。三個遊手好閒的年輕人中任何一個都有可能是兇手。他耳邊迴響起&ldo;心理不健全&rdo;、&ldo;精神病醫生的報告&rdo;之類的話來。毫無疑問，案件會以這樣的話告終。不過。在晚會上淹死一個孩子‐‐還是比較奇特。雖然有過學生不聽警告，乘搭陌生人的車，沒有回到家中，反而在附近礫石堆中找到了屍體。兩樁案子大不相同。礫石堆，是哪年的事喲？都過去好多年啦。思索了四分鐘左右，富勒頓先生滑了清嗓子（聽得出他得了哮喘病），開口說話。
